The VISUAL ARTIST

(Top left)  "Folk Influence on Modern Philippine Art" (2002) and (bottom left) "KAYUMANGGI  Biographies of Philippine Visual Artists" (2000) were both authored by Jane Stangle Apostol-Alvero and published by Peso Book Foundation. (Above) Reuben's works as featured on Folk Influence on Modern Philippine Art - (clockwise) "Pagninilay-nilay (Meditation), "Lamang-Dagat"(Sea Creatures),  and ASIAN THUMBNAILS.

As far as he can remember, Reuben started making doodles when he was five, just right before he started humming tunes.  His father started seeing potential in him, as he would participate in on the spot drawing competitions at school.  In 1981, he joined the Metro Manila wide on the spot painting contest to celebrate the "Ati-Atihan" festival, a feast held in January in celebration of the Sto. Nino or the holy infant Jesus.  Reuben finished top 10 besting other schools in Metro Manila.

Reuben finished his undergraduate studies at the University of the Philippines with a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design.  He went on and became one of the visual display artists of GIORDANO, an international clothing company based in Hongkong with branches around key cities in the world including Manila.

He didn't have any formal training in painting, since Interior Design and Fine Arts were two different courses offered at the state university.  He enjoyed rendering interior spaces in watercolor, but right after college, he started deliving into acylic in making fine art.  He evenually discovered for himself the versatility of this medium and the wonders of acrylic painting.

Reuben is a patriotic Filipino as depicted in his works capturing the sensibilities of the Filipino, may it be as simple as appreciating the beauty of the Filipina, or its culture as colorful and festive as its fiestas.  He also loves painitng images and sensibilities of Asia on his canvas.  In 2001, Reuben was one of the featured artists at an exhibit called "Tindero, Tindera, Tienda" held at the Artspace of the  Ayala Center, which was sponsored by Teresita Alcantara- Luna and Mario Alcantara of Heritage Arts and Antiquities. Reuben was featured in two Filipino Art coffee table books namely "Kayumanggi:  Biographies of Philippines Visual Artists", and "Folk Influence on Modern Philippine Art".

Reuben graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design at the University of the Philippines. A "sablay" is a sash in Filipino, and in this case worn as a symbol of achievement sans wearing the traditional toga.

one of Reuben's father's legacies is making him understand life by encouraging him to meditate  on the Bible and introducing him to famous proverbs & adages from great thinkers such as this one by Stephen Grellet.
